Civil/Transportation Engineering Intern


Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC has an opening in our Evansville, Indiana, office for a Civil/Transportation Engineering Intern for the summer of 2019, with the ability to continue during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Essential Functions May Include:

  • Learning to review site drawings for relevant information under the supervision of an engineer.

  • Accompany a project manager on field visits and learn how to capture relevant project information in the field.

  • Learning DOT requirements for various engineered systems and how to apply them in the field.

  • Performing a variety of basic to moderately-difficult engineering support assignments requiring a fundamental knowledge of design/drafting standards, practices, and techniques.

  • Perform field data collection under the direction of an engineer or project manager

  • Assisting with engineering notes, specifications, rough sketches, and formalizing them into working drawings.

  • Utilizing a CAD workstation to prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates according to established standards and procedures.

  • Utilizing technical manuals and directives to ensure compliance with codes and company policies.

  • Compiling data and performing routine calculations required for the either the administration of a project.

  • Assist in design and permitting of the following types of projects: roadway, bikeway, erosion control, grading, storm drainage, and sanitary sewer collection systems.

  • Perform conceptual and detailed design calculations and analyses

  • Assist in preparation of detailed engineering reports and supporting documents

  • Coordinate with other engineering staff in multiple offices

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute work in a safe, timely, cost effective and compliant manner

  • Perform assignments under the direct supervision of an engineering supervisor

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) programs. Familiarity with Microstation or AutoCAD Civil 3D a plus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate ABET Accredited Civil Engineering (or Engineering with Civil Emphasis) program. Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA

  • Previous office experience or field application of engineering concepts (ie farming, excavation, construction, etc.) preferred

  • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment

  • Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills

Professional Land Surveyor/Manager

Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC has an opening in our St. Paul, Minnesota office for a Professional Land Surveyor with approximately 10+ years of Professional Land Surveying experience. This exciting position will afford successful applicants the opportunity to develop and grow the Land Surveying Sector of this developing office location!

As a member of our team, you will manage and oversee a variety of in-office and field tasks associated with land surveying/civil engineering projects by directing survey plan preparation, conducting Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and topographic surveys, researching survey records, preparing and reviewing survey maps and drawings, performing quality control reviews, assisting with RFP responses and proposal development, and serving as a Project Manager by managing project cost estimates, schedules, and financials. 

Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Land Surveying from an accredited college/university.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of previous boundary and topographic surveying experience.

  • Professional registration in the State of Minnesota with the ability to obtain registration in additional states.

  • Strong knowledge of Public Land Survey System (PLSS) terminology and procedures, modern survey methods and survey devices, such as total stations, Global Positioning System (GPS), and data collectors.

  • Strong knowledge of legal aspects of boundary surveying, including laws, statues, and ordinances.

  • Perform field work for land surveying scopes of work including construction staking, boundary location, ALTA and topography for various project types.

  • Exercise sound judgment in assessing common surveying and research-related situations, and use of effective approaches for choosing a course of action for developing appropriate solutions.

  • Ability to accurately prepare fee estimates for services.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills; Ability to lead and/or participate in discussions during client consultations and project team meetings.

  • Ability to works in all weather conditions, and stand or walk for long periods.

  • Ability to carry up to 60 pounds of surveying equipment over rough and steep terrain.

  • Ability to travel as needed to conduct surveys, attend team meetings, and consult with clients; Occasional overnight travel may be required.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Assist business development and operations team with proposals and client development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience or training with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microstation, or ArcGIS.

  • Previous experience with Trimble GPS and Trimble Robotics.

Project Engineer/Project Manager

Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC has an opening for a Professional Engineer with approximately 10+ years of highway and roadway design experience. Applicants should have a thorough understanding of Department of Transportation design policies and local municipality code requirements; effective management skills for which to plan, direct, and monitor all aspects of projects; and the ability to coordinate with other internal and/or external team members.

The successful candidate will plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate technical work on portions of major projects or in a total project of moderate scope. S/He will provide assistance to Team Leads in preparing current status information for internal reporting and for keeping clients informed on progress. The candidate should have a BS in Civil Engineering, PE license, the ability to secure PE licensure in other states, and 10+ years of progressively challenged design experience. 

The following duties are delegated responsibilities:

  • Prepare project scope, schedule, and fee for review by Team Lead.

  • Prepare design plans for projects s/he leads and/or the tasks assigned to him/her.

  • Prepare and process construction plans for approval.

  • Prepare supporting calculations, construction specifications, and permitting for residential and commercial projects in various jurisdictions.

  • Complete design calculations.

  • Research code requirements and design procedures manuals.

  • Verify design computations and plan detailing for conformance with codes, manuals, and design considerations.

  • Operate Microstation V8i, GeoPak, and various other software applications.

  • Visit project sites to review conditions as appropriate.

  • Coordinate with other engineers, technicians, and administrative assistants during preliminary and final plan preparation for conformance to standards and code requirements.

  • Prepare draft correspondence, technical specifications, and reports.

  • Attend and participate in various client meetings with various local, transportation, and regulatory agencies, as appropriate.

  • Have good oral and written communication skills in order to lead and/or moderate meetings with interested parties and stakeholders.

  • Communicate with project team members, client representatives, review agencies, and others as appropriate to project.

  • Coordinate final design computations with review agencies.

  • Coordinate utility disposition on projects with involved public and private utility companies.

  • Prepare draft cost estimates, periodic reports covering construction activities, pay estimates, and data necessary to document acceptability of materials and quantities for final payment.

Civil Engineer I or Engineering Technician

Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineer I or Engineering Technician to join our Transportation/Land Development Team. Qualified candidates will have a solid technical background, a strong sense of project ownership/responsibility, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment. This position may include performing and/or leading field investigations; engineering analysis, calculations, and recommendations; design and development of plans and specifications; survey support; report writing; research and resolve design and construction problems; and assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Perform engineering work with the Transportation/Land Development Team

  • Work on engineering designs preparing construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates for various projects

  • Assist with design and preparation of grading, drainage, and utility plan packages for a wide range of municipal and private infrastructure projects.

  • Site design of parking lots, roads, curb and gutter, utilities, etc.

  • Assist with cost estimating designs and performing quantity take offs

  • Prepare engineering related calculations and develop drawings and visual aids

  • Draft technical memoranda, reports, and electronic deliverables

  • Assisting with studies and alternative analysis

  • Perform CAD and Civil3D drafting

  • Developing understanding of regulatory and permitting requirements for a variety of jurisdictions

  • Duties may also include field activities such as site investigations or being a part of a survey crew
